Curriculum

Alessandro Maria Carnelli has conducted at the Vienna Musikverein on multiple occasions, and in Milan (Sala Verdi, Teatro Dal Verme, and Triennale). He conducted the ensemble of the Teatro Regio di Torino for the “Histoire du soldat (Soldier's Tale)” by Stravinsky, Dido and Aeneas in Turin (with a shadow theatre production by Controluce), and a double production of “Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda” by Monteverdi. The Italian performance was a stage production while the Swiss version was in collaboration with a contemporary dance company. Sky Classica has broadcast his conducting of Schumann’s Cello Concerto (with soloist Luca Franzetti) several times. Recently he conducted in Vienna the premiere of his orchestral version of the Drei Gesänge by Schubert (soloist: Giovanni Battista Parodi).

Carnelli’s repertoire extends from the 17th century to world premieres. His particular focus is on Vienna (from Haydn to Mahler, Schönberg and Berg), and he frequently offers themed programs and projects in which the music interacts with other forms of expression.

Carnelli has dedicated himself to a wide-ranging project on Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht. Starting from the publication of his book: Il labirinto e l'intrico dei viottoli, the first ever monograph on the subject, he has since branched out to concerts, conferences and meetings dedicated to this composition. The project also includes a CD, recorded during a cycle of concerts with the Orchestra da Camera di Mantova (Mantua Chamber Orchestra). The book and the CD have received glowing reviews at an international level - the book has been described as “admirable” by Quirino Principe in Il Sole 24 Ore and “splendid” in Amadeus magazine. Amadeus also awarded the CD its “best of the month” award while Cesare Fertonani described it as “a splendid, inventive, thrilling recording”.

Collaboration with the Mantua Chamber Orchestra is ongoing, with other concerts (among them the Concerto K488 with pianist Gabriele Carcano) and the recording of a second CD: ''A Symphony and its Consequences'' (Da Vinci Records) - the reconstruction of the influence of the Symphony no.39 by Haydn on the G minor Symphony by Vanhal, and subsequently the influence of Vanhal on the Symphony no.25 by Mozart.

Along with Cristina Corrieri he has created two ensembles: the Ensemble Imaginaire, which focuses mainly on the rediscovery of Neapolitan Baroque and the Ensemble Progetto Pierrot. With the first ensemble he conducted the first performance of the critical edition of L’ammalato immaginario di Vinci. With Ensemble Progetto Pierrot he presented Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire in Italy and Germany: first as a multimedia project in collaboration with IED - Istituto Europeo di Design (Triennale di Milano), then as a stage production with actress Cristina Liparoto and most recently as a shadow theatre production with the Controluce company from Turin. He is currently presenting a program dedicated to the world of Mahler with this ensemble, for which he has selected and transcribed several Wunderhorn Songs, set in context along with other pieces from Mahler himself, Schubert and Berg. Both Pierrot lunaire and the Mahler program, with the voice of Federica Napoletani, have been presented in the Teatro Bibiena in Mantua during the Mantua Chamber Music festival.

Since 2004, he has been involved with a program for talented youth, which is supported by the Fondazione Salina. This is a rare example of long-term training with private funding in Italy. From 2006 to 2010 he was assistant to Umberto Benedetti Michelangeli and tutor in the project for the Orchestra sinfonica giovanile del VCO, which he has conducted in various concerts. He has also worked with the Novara Conservatory for the performance of pieces by young composers.

Alessandro Maria Carnelli studied orchestra conducting from 2000 to 2004 at the Wiener Musikseminar in Vienna with Erwin Acél and followed several courses and master classes. In 1999 he was awarded a scholarship from the Wagner Foundation at the Festival of Bayreuth. He has also studied piano, baroque organ, composition and musicology.

As well as being the author of the above-mentioned book on Schoenberg's Transfigured Night, Il labirinto e l'intrico dei viottoli, Carnelli has written monographs on Mussorgsky, Tchaikovsky, and Shostakovich, which were published by Skira and Corriere della Sera.
